You drive north from Reykjavik through the tunnel under the Hvalfjordur, past the town of Borgarnes, through the area of Borgarfjordur. Turn left shortly after you pass Hredavatnsskali and keep on going past the village Budardalur. From there you drive to Bjarkarlundur. After that you follow the coast line towards west, through the Bardastrandarsysla, there are many beautiful fjords on the way and very nice scenery. Parts of the roads are gravel roads i.e. they do not have smooth pavement.

There is a traffic circle just outside of Borgarnes, there you head towards Stykkisholmur.
You take a right turn by a small shop called Vegamot and another right turn when you come over the low mountain Vatnaleid.
It takes two and a half hour (can be up to two hours and forty minutes) to go across the Breidafjordur with the ferry. It stops in Flatey, a small island, on the fjord. It is possible for visitors to stop there, between trips and a crew member on board the ferry, drives your car up on land, either in Stykkisholmur or at Brjanslaekur.
When you get to Brjanslaekur where the ferry arrives, you turn left (west) on the main road and drive over the Kleifaheidi to Patreksfjordur.

If you already are in the Westfjords, you can drive from Isafjordur to Patreksfjordur through Thingeyri past the Museum of Jon Sigurdsson at Hrafnseyri and the beautiful waterfall of Dynjandi, towards Flokalundur and Brjanslaekur over the Kleifaheidi to Patreksfjordur.

It’s also possible to take a small plane that goes six days a week to Bildudalur. A bus goes from the airport to Talknafjordur and Patreksfjordur.
